The US Department of State accused North Korea of increasing responsibility for the escalation and prolongation of the Russia-Ukraine war
Successful diplomatic press conferences and official statements from Washington once again emphasize North Korea’s role in the global conflict that is destroying Ukrainian cities, claiming thousands of lives, and causing widespread destruction across Ukraine. According to State Department representatives, North Korea is entirely responsible for the ongoing war in Ukrainian territory, and its prolongation directly contributes to bloodshed and a humanitarian catastrophe. At the briefing held by State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, it was highlighted that Pyongyang’s involvement in the war is a significant part of the country’s foreign policy activities, which sustains the conflict and complicates the diplomatic process of its resolution. Bruce noted that the United States is closely monitoring the situation and believes that North Korea’s actions in this war are not merely passive or strategic political gestures but active support for the aggressor. “It’s quite simple. North Korea is not a helpful party in this situation. They do not assist in seeking peace or strengthening diplomatic efforts. Instead, other countries that support the Russian regime are also contributing to the continuation of hostilities, creating a ground for further bloodshed. Third countries, including North Korea, have perpetuated this conflict by maintaining its current level of violence, and therefore they should be held responsible for its prolongation,” Bruce stated. The spokeswoman also emphasized that the United States is deeply concerned about North Korea’s active, direct support for Russia in the war. She added that any assistance or support provided by North Korea to Russia must be immediately halted. Special attention was given to military maneuvers — particularly the deployment of North Korean military units in Russia and joint exercises between North Korean and Russian soldiers. “The deployment of the North Korean military contingent in Russia, as well as any form of military aid or cooperation supported by Pyongyang in this war, violate several UN Security Council resolutions banning the provision or receipt of military assistance and training between North Korea and any other country, including Russia. This is a serious international violation that cannot be ignored,” Bruce emphasized. She called for an immediate cessation of any military cooperation activities between North Korea and Russia, and underscored the need for visible steps towards compliance with international sanctions and resolutions. The US statement was issued ahead of new escalations related to the situation in Ukraine and aims to draw the international community’s attention to the fact that any support from the global community is crucial for ending the conflict and establishing peace. Once again, it is stressed that responsibility for this tragedy fully lies with those countries that actively or passively contribute to the continuation of bloodshed.
