The arrest was unexpected for the perpetrator, and he is now in custody. His activities already raise significant questions about the scale of enemy plans against Ukraine. According to official sources, a 47-year-old Russian citizen, who had previously lived in Kyiv for over a decade, is accused of espionage in favor of Russian special services — FSB. Specifically, he is suspected of acting as an undercover agent preparing sabotage and terrorist attacks in key districts of the capital. This individual worked in the media sector, including at a Ukrainian radio station, while simultaneously fulfilling assignments from Russian leadership. According to investigation data, the detained person was engaged in espionage activities, including monitoring vehicles near administrative buildings of defense agencies in central Kyiv. To accomplish his tasks, he used covert photography, hiding his activities behind simulated phone conversations — pressing his phone to his ear to appear as if he was conducting an important call — and transmitted the gathered information to his handlers via messaging apps. The main goal of the Russian special services, according to the investigation, was to collect intelligence from infrastructure objects of strategic importance to the country's defense. A particularly alarming plan involves Russian killers intending to set fire to vehicles to destabilize Kyiv. According to the SBU, the Russian agent was instructed to place explosive devices in certain cars, which had been marked — later remotely activating homemade explosives to create chaos and undermine the situation in the city. This underscores the seriousness of Russian special services’ objectives in our city, aiming to sow panic and discredit the Ukrainian authorities through foreign mercenaries. The arrest was made thanks to the effective work of SBU cyber specialists, who conducted reconnaissance near one of Kyiv’s defense facilities. As a result, the detained individual’s mobile phone was confiscated — a device used to transmit information to Russian colleagues and to record infrastructure objects. The man is currently in a pre-trial detention center and awaiting trial. He has been charged under Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — espionage. This detention is just one example of the active counter-terrorist efforts by Ukrainian security agencies. In April, the SBU reported the detention of a 30-year-old woman from Boryspil, who, under the instructions of Russian special services, was planning to install a mini-camera to coordinate missile strikes against Ukrainian targets in the Kyiv region. This demonstrates how deeply Russian agents have infiltrated Ukrainian security and intelligence circles, and how crucial it is to implement unprecedented measures to prevent terrorist acts. Overall, these arrests confirm Russia’s aggressive foreign intentions and underscore that Ukrainian law enforcement and special services are working at full capacity to prevent the enemy’s actions and to protect peace and security in the country. However, each such case is also a reminder of the constant threat and the need to remain vigilant in the fight against all forms of terrorism and subversive activities by the aggressor.
