He stated this during a ceremonial event dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Germany’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which took place in Brussels. At this important forum, the politician emphasized that Berlin will continue to be an active and inspired participant in assisting Ukraine from a military perspective and more broadly in its European integration aspirations. As reported by a correspondent of "European Pravda," during his speech, Steinmeier stressed the unbreakable nature of German support: "We will continue to be the strongest support for Ukraine in Europe, advocating for its freedom, sovereignty, and aspiration for a European future," he declared. At a time when Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine is ongoing with maximum force, and the USA and other Western countries are steadfastly and very persistently urging their European allies to ramp up efforts to assist Kyiv, the German political leader made a crucial point about the importance of solidarity and swift action. His words imply that Berlin, understanding all the challenges and external pressures, aims to enhance its defense capabilities by simultaneously improving both quantitatively and qualitatively its military potential and defense industrial base. "Depending on the current situation and international dynamics, Germany is at a decisive moment. That is why I address you, our partners and allies, with sincere thanks for your support and a call to act as swiftly and coordinated as possible," emphasized the head of state. He also highlighted that Berlin and partner countries have already taken into account these challenges and are responding appropriately: "We have heard this call, understood it, and now it is crucial for us to take all necessary steps to ensure security for Ukraine and at the same time strengthen our own defense capabilities," he added. During his speech, Steinmeier addressed NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, assuring him that Germany can and will be a reliable partner: "You can count on us," he emphasized. The head of the German delegation did not limit himself to words of support: he underlined that the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) will continue to strengthen its military capabilities and invest in the development of the defense industry. This will align with the country’s commitments and aspirations to meet NATO regional and international standards, fulfill its part in joint security policy, and support stability in Europe. "We will work diligently to meet our obligations according to NATO regional plans, wholeheartedly supporting Ukraine’s pursuit of security and peace," Steinmeier stressed. Additionally, it is worth recalling that recently, the German government took another significant step toward greater flexibility in military matters by requesting the European Union to expand its capabilities for regulating defense expenditures. This will enable Berlin not only to respond more effectively to external threats but also to accelerate the implementation of planned military and defense projects within the EU. In light of these developments, the future Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, has openly expressed his readiness to deliver Taurus long-range missile systems to Ukraine, contingent upon approval from European partners regarding the relevant procedures and strategic considerations. Contrary to this statement, the Kremlin criticized the idea, seeing it as a potential factor of escalation and a breach of established diplomatic norms. Thus, Germany’s current policy toward Ukraine serves as an important and illustrative signal to all of Europe that Berlin maintains a firm stance in supporting Kyiv during these difficult times, while simultaneously strengthening its defensive and strategic positions through internal reforms and external policy initiatives. This reflects the responsible and purposeful attitude of the German authorities toward global security and their desire to stay at the forefront in the fight for democratic values and European ideals.
