A tragic incident involving the use of weapons occurred in Mykolaiv region

As a result of an attempt to escape from law enforcement officers, a 21-year-old reformatted police sergeant was killed when the suspect threw a grenade toward the police. The event took place on April 28 in one of the settlements in the region and has already caused widespread resonance in society and law enforcement circles. According to official information provided by Ivan Vygivskyi, the head of the National Police of Ukraine, everything began when officers responded to a call from local residents regarding a family quarrel. The police patrol arrived at the scene to establish the circumstances and ensure peace. However, the situation quickly deteriorated when the suspect—later identified as a young man—began to flee the scene. During the escape, he did not hesitate and took an aggressive step—pulled out a grenade and, with a quick movement, threw it toward the police. As a result of this explosion, a tragic, unplanned event occurred — 21-year-old police sergeant Maxym Rizhko, who was part of the patrol response unit of the Voznesensk district police department, died instantly from injuries incompatible with life. In addition to him, three other police officers were seriously wounded and are currently hospitalized under medical supervision. The head of the National Police made an important statement: "Recently, Maxym became a father, and his daughter will learn about his heroic deed," said Vygivskyi. "For all those who doubt the necessity and importance of police work and think it should be sent to the front, remember this tragedy and ask yourself: ‘What if something like this happens to my relatives? What will I do?’" He emphasized that citizens currently possess a significant amount of weapons and ammunition. This creates additional danger, as it is difficult to predict where a conflict or unforeseen situation may occur. At the same time, according to Vygivskyi, police are ready to respond quickly and take the initiative to protect citizens. "Every day, police officers respond to thousands of various calls. No one knows in advance what emergencies they will face where police work. But we are prepared for any challenge and, valuing every life, protect citizens not only at the rear but also in the hottest spots, at the front lines," Vygivskyi stated. This tragedy once again reminds us of the high risks and the price of service in law enforcement agencies, as well as the necessity of ensuring safety and supporting police officers who stand guard for peace and order in the country every day. Through their heroism and selfless acts in saving civilians' lives, they increasingly become victims of merciless incidents and criminal acts, especially during difficult wartime and the rising armed conflict in Ukraine.
