Such statements were made ahead of the increasing interest in international circles regarding the prospects of diplomatic resolution of the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in an interview with CBS News, reported that Moscow and Washington are approaching the possibility of agreements with an open attitude; however, there are a number of issues that still require coordination. According to him, Moscow is actively working on clarifying and refining those provisions that may be of a compromise nature and that could help stabilize the situation. Lavrov emphasized that both sides are united by the desire to find a common solution and, in his words, there are signs of movement in the right direction. Regarding particular aspects of the negotiation process, the Russian diplomat noted that the U.S. President also sees the potential for mutual agreements and believes that both countries are moving in this direction. This became one of the key messages within the context of diplomatic efforts for de-escalation of the conflict. Lavrov expressed the opinion that the ability of both sides to make compromises could become the key to eventual peace. Furthermore, during the interview, the Russian Foreign Minister indicated that among world leaders, there are few who openly acknowledge the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict and striving for a long-term resolution. In particular, he named former U.S. President Donald Trump as perhaps the only one among contemporary world leaders, who, according to Lavrov, recognizes the importance of eliminating the main causes of the crisis and taking actions aimed at its resolution. Referring to international diplomacy in the context of possible agreements, recently emerged documents could influence the course of negotiations. Media reported that the Trump administration at the end of last week in Paris handed Ukraine a one-page document with proposals for conflict resolution. It is claimed that this document indicated the U.S. was willing to recognize Russia’s control over Ukrainian Crimea and to ease some sanctions against Moscow. This has sparked significant interest and concern within the international community. The Financial Times notes that some European officials are expressing concern that such U.S. proposals could not only undermine transatlantic unity but also risk jeopardizing the NATO summit scheduled for the end of June. In this context, many experts and diplomats warn that any substantial easing of sanctions and recognition of territories controlled by Russia could call into question the steadfast support for Ukraine from the West, as well as create additional preconditions for escalating geopolitical tensions. The main intrigue remains the question of how seriously and in what detail the sides are willing to advance in the negotiation process. Currently, it is clear that the diplomatic landscape between Russia and the U.S. is gradually being filled with new proposals and clarifications, but final agreements are still far from being reached.
