Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky once again emphasized the irrational commitment to diplomatic efforts in resolving the war, but at the same time he underscored that the key condition for starting any negotiations with Russian occupiers is a complete, unconditional, and all-encompassing ceasefire

During a press conference held on April 24 together with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Ukrainian leader highlighted that without fulfilling this condition, initiating dialogue at this time is impossible and unfeasible. "This is the first and most important step. We speak about compromises, and we agree with that, but it must be understood that we were under aggression, we were occupied, and tens of thousands of Ukrainian lives were destroyed. Many children and adults are buried alive under the rubble. And the fact that Ukraine is willing to sit at the negotiating table only after a complete ceasefire from the aggressor is a huge and difficult compromise," Zelensky stated. He emphasized that the Ukrainian side is interested in a quick end to the war and is ready to consider any peace initiatives that begin precisely with the implementation of the most crucial condition — a ceasefire. However, according to the president, as long as Russia refuses to agree to this, it will remain an unattainable goal for Ukraine. "The majority of the world's partners, as well as Ukraine itself, support the idea of an immediate ceasefire. But, unfortunately, there is currently no willingness from the Russian Federation to see a truce," the head of state underscored. Zelensky also outlined two important "red lines" in the negotiation process: the return of all kidnapped Ukrainian children home and a comprehensive "all for all" exchange. According to him, these are not just formal components but extremely important issues for Ukrainian families affected by Russian aggression. He is currently optimistic about the potential for diplomatic efforts and calls for increased pressure from the USA to intensify diplomatic negotiations and accelerate the end of the war. "We hope that the USA can persuade Russia of the necessity of taking this step. We expect more activity from their side, because only through joint efforts can we achieve peace and security for our country," Zelensky stated, adding that diplomacy remains one of the most important tools in the fight for Ukraine's freedom and territorial integrity.
