This decision was made by the city authorities against the backdrop of widespread destruction and human losses recorded as a result of the nighttime shelling. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko emphasized in his official statement that April 25 will be a day of mourning and remembrance for those who lost their lives. "Tomorrow, April 25, has been declared a Day of Mourning in Kyiv. It is an opportunity to show our respect and sympathy to all who lost loved ones due to the massive attack by enemy forces," he stated. The prelude to these tragic events unfolded on the night of April 24 to 25, when Ukraine once again became the target of a large-scale combined attack by Russian troops. Air defense forces fought with maximum effort, battling a missile barrage aimed at residential neighborhoods, infrastructure, and other city facilities. By the morning of the first day after the attack, reports indicated at least nine people killed and over sixty injured, including several children and a pregnant woman. Much of the damage affected civilian objects, particularly the housing sector. In the Sviato-Shynskyi district of the capital, a multi-story building was destroyed. Rescue services worked around the clock, conducting continuous operations to search for and extract people from under the rubble. At that time, it seemed that the search for two children missing under the debris was nearing completion. Voices of rescuers, phone calls, and pleas for help continued around the damaged building. By the end of the day, rescuers reported that they had managed to extract a living man from under the debris. His condition is currently stable, and he has already received assistance. At the same time, the number of victims in Kyiv increased — as of the morning of April 25, the death toll had reached nine, including six adults and three children. An unidentified body fragment remained at the scene, confirming the scale of the tragedy. Overall, the nighttime attack affected 77 people. More than 30 of them are currently hospitalized, including children. Specifically, 26 adults and 5 minors are receiving medical care, many with medium to severe injuries. The international and Ukrainian communities condemn the actions of the enemy, and authorities once again call on everyone to remain vigilant and to unite efforts in countering the aggression and restoring peaceful life in the capital and across the country.
