US Secretary of State Mark Rutteo announced that after three years of silence, the United States has finally been able to establish contacts with Russia and conduct a deeper analysis of its intentions and goals in the ongoing conflict that has now lasted over a year. According to him, this change in diplomatic relations allows for a better understanding and more accurate forecasting of future developments. In an interview with The Free Press, Rutteo emphasized that the American side believes that there is no military solution to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and therefore the US is focusing on diplomatic avenues to resolve the conflict. He also highlighted that their understanding of Russia’s position has significantly deepened, as, in his words, three years of silence were interrupted, enabling direct communication with Moscow. “We are trying to understand what Russia’s stance really is — and now it is clearer than before because, finally, communication has resumed,” the diplomat noted. He also pointed out that if the differences in viewpoints prove too substantial and paths to peace remain unreachable, it may become necessary to draw conclusions regarding the relevance of further diplomatic efforts. The head of American diplomacy stressed that the US has made maximum efforts to seek a compromise and will continue to do so as long as there is a possibility to find a pathway to peace. “We have done everything possible, and we will continue to do so,” he declared. “If, over time, we realize that the stark distance between the sides becomes insurmountable, it may be necessary to reassess priorities and focus on other pressing international issues. This is not our war, and we cannot fight it for others,” Rutteo added. It is important to note that, according to the high-ranking official, the ultimate responsibility for resolving the conflict lies with Russia and Ukraine — it depends on them whether they can find common ground. Earlier statements by Rutteo contained the idea that the US might abandon efforts to achieve peace if significant progress is not observed in negotiations in the coming days. This position was also emphasized by US President Donald Trump, who expressed readiness to cease diplomatic initiatives if efforts do not yield results, though he did not specify the conditions under which such efforts would be halted. Thus, the situation surrounding the Ukraine-Russia conflict remains tense, with the main challenge being both sides’ ability to find mutual understanding. The United States, with its altered approach to the conflict, shows greater interest in diplomatic resolution but is also prepared for the possibility that this path might prove unsuccessful. At the same time, the international community continues to focus on finding mechanisms to end the war, which has already cost many lives and destroyed Ukraine’s infrastructure, and it is quite likely that the future stability of the entire global order depends on the further actions of both Kremlin and Kyiv.
