Vladimir Putin commented on the Easter truce initiated by Russia before the holidays and emphasized the need to carefully analyze its results
According to the Russian leader, Moscow must draw profound conclusions from the experience gained during this temporary ceasefire to avoid repeating mistakes and to better understand the effectiveness of such tactics in the context of modern warfare. In a comment quoted on April 21 by Russian state media, Putin stated: “We need to think and carefully look at the results of the experience of announcing the Easter ceasefire.” Although he expressed himself cautiously, he underscored that the value of ceasefires remains high for Russia, as Moscow traditionally supports this practice and considers it an important element of diplomacy and military strategy. “We always approach ceasefires positively, which is why we initiated one for Easter,” Putin said. At the same time, he mentioned that, according to him, the Russian side recorded a decrease in hostilities from Kyiv during the observance of the ceasefire conditions. However, simultaneously, Ukrainian forces carried out over 5,000 attacks during the period when the ceasefire regime was in effect. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reports that only one day in April was free of violations—about three thousand incidents of breach by Ukrainian forces, illustrating the complex situation surrounding the compliance process and the actual effectiveness of the ceasefire. Additionally, the Kremlin leader expressed the opinion that there is a need to “look into” the Ukrainian proposal to prevent strikes on civilian objects. Ukraine floated this idea as a step toward alleviating the suffering of the civilian population and increasing trust during negotiations. However, according to Putin, this proposal must be carefully assessed to determine its feasibility, considering the military and diplomatic situation. Overall, Putin's statements indicate the Kremlin’s desire to carefully evaluate previous actions and draw conclusions for future steps in this complex war. At the same time, his words confirm that Moscow reserves the right to initiative proposals regarding ceasefires and other diplomatic measures but also maintains a critical attitude towards the extent to which Ukraine complies with agreements and how stable and effective such arrangements are under current conditions of confrontation.
