Official spokesperson of the Russian leadership, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed that the messages from the U.S. capital that Ukraine will not be seeking to join NATO are in line with Moscow’s position and evoke a sense of satisfaction in the Kremlin. Peskov’s statements were made in the context of information warfare and diplomatic discussions surrounding regional security. According to him, Moscow fully supports the assertion that Ukraine’s accession to NATO is impossible and unacceptable for Russia. He emphasized that such statements from Washington have only recently begun to be made from various levels of the American authorities, which, in the Kremlin’s view, confirms their course and policies. The Kremlin spokesperson highlighted that this position coincides with Russian interests and is unambiguous: “We have heard from the American side that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is excluded, and for us, this is an important signal. It brings satisfaction to Moscow because we have always stressed that the prospect of Ukraine joining the alliance conflicts with our national interests and security,” he stated in his remarks. Peskov also revisited Russian narratives concerning the conflict around this issue, emphasizing that Ukraine’s pursuit of NATO membership is one of the key reasons for current regional tension and, effectively, one of the prerequisites for the escalation of military actions. At the same time, the official representative refused to comment on rumors and reports in the media claiming that the U.S. is allegedly preparing to recognize Russian control over annexed Crimea as part of upcoming peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. “There are many rumors and discussions at the moment. It is important to understand that the process of seeking ways to resolve the conflict cannot and should not be conducted publicly and openly. This is a very delicate matter, and any informational leaks should be treated with utmost caution and responsibility,” Peskov emphasized, underlining the confidentiality of diplomatic negotiations and the particular mode of confidentiality that must be approached very carefully to avoid fostering false or provocative assumptions. Nevertheless, his words reflect the Kremlin’s intention to uphold its stance against NATO expansion to Ukrainian borders, which remains a key element of Russia’s foreign policy and security doctrine. Meanwhile, Western countries emphasize that the issue of Ukraine’s security and its potential NATO membership remains a subject of intense diplomatic debate and disagreement among allies. The main Western nations are primarily concerned with maintaining the stability and integrity of Ukraine amid Russian aggression.
