In the United States of America, government authorities and agencies have adopted a course of expressing profound respect and sympathy in connection with the death of Pope Francis. By order of former President Donald Trump, the national flag was lowered as a tribute to the memory of the Catholic spiritual leader, who passed away on April 21 at his residence in Vatican City. According to an official decree issued in the United States, the lowering of flags applies to a wide range of objects and territories. The document specifies that this includes all government buildings and territories, military installations and naval bases across the country, as well as federal military ships in the Federal District of Columbia, i.e., in Washington, D.C., and throughout all regions and territories of the United States. This symbolic act will continue until sunset on the day of Pope Francis’s funeral. Additionally, the order extends to U.S. diplomatic missions abroad — embassies, consulates, and representations. Specifically, the lowering of flags will also apply to all military installations in foreign countries, as well as ships and naval stations with American presence. This gesture serves as an informal but sincere expression of grief and respect for the memory of the Pontiff, who for over 88 years fought for peace, justice, and spiritual connection with believers worldwide. Already on the morning of Monday, the American flag on the White House roof was lowered to half-staff, symbolizing mourning and respect. On the grounds of the presidential residence, traditional Easter festivities also took place, demonstrating national unity and commitment to spiritual values. Globally, the reaction to Pope Francis’s death was even more profound. Spain announced a three-day national mourning in memory of one of the most influential spiritual leaders of our time. According to reports from the Vatican, Francis died in the early hours of April 21 at his residence — the Casa Santa Marta. Official sources indicated that his death may have been caused by a stroke, which is also confirmed by Italian media. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also expressed condolences regarding the loss — stating that “millions of believers around the world mourn.” The funeral ceremony and the world community’s tribute once again highlighted the significance and role of Francis as a spiritual guide, who for decades served as a unifying symbol of spirituality and humanism during a challenging period in human history.
