The U

S. Secretary of State openly expressed his views regarding the prospects of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, emphasizing the hopelessness of a swift resolution and highlighting the likelihood of a prolonged and exhausting confrontation. In an interview with journalists in Paris, France, Marco Rubio admitted that neither the Ukrainian nor the Russian side currently possesses sufficient strategic resources and capabilities to quickly and unilaterally end the war. His words carried a clear message — the United States will not support diplomatic efforts indefinitely if the situation on the battlefield and in negotiations does not begin to show the first positive signs. During his communication with journalists at Le Bourget Airport in Paris, Rubio noted that the war has reached a deadlock, as both Ukraine and Russia lack enough strength and resources to achieve victory swiftly. According to him, delaying peace initiatives will only worsen the humanitarian crisis and lead to even greater human casualties on both sides. Citing an example, he emphasized the tragic destruction caused by a recent missile strike on Sumy that occurred on Palm Sunday and took civilian lives; such incidents serve as reminders of a reality where war destroys and devastates dozens of lives daily. “We must ask ourselves — is it possible to end this war quickly? I can clearly say — no, there is no military solution,” Rubio stated. In his view, none of the involved parties currently has sufficient strategic capacity for an immediate end to the conflict. Therefore, the United States is primarily focused on preventing even greater human tragedies in the coming year. “We aim to prevent thousands and thousands of people from becoming victims of this war, and we are doing everything possible to reduce bloodshed,” the diplomat added. More specifically, Rubio shared that over the past three years, with billions of U.S. dollars spent on supporting Ukraine and diplomatic efforts, Washington has done everything possible to facilitate the search for peace. At the same time, he emphasized that the U.S. administration is not prepared to sustain endless negotiations without signs of tangible progress. “We are ready to continue supporting these processes for as long as necessary, but not indefinitely and not without forward movement,” he underscored. Rubio arrived in Paris on April 17, the day before, to participate in the initial joint discussions on Ukraine involving representatives from the U.S., Europe, and Ukraine. These talks are taking place amid difficulties in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, as European countries seek to draw greater attention to their positions and interests. Notably, following the meeting held on April 18, American and European diplomats emphasized the need to quickly determine the possibility of achieving peace, while also noting that for the U.S., other global issues remain a priority. Earlier, during his statements, one of the main U.S. diplomats highlighted that if there are no visible signs of progress in the near future, the U.S. administration is ready to cease diplomatic efforts to find peace in Ukraine. President Donald Trump, who supported such an option even before the official declaration, acknowledged that in the case of complete hopelessness of negotiations, the U.S. might abandon the idea and focus on other priorities. However, specific conditions and timelines for such decisions remain unclear, further increasing tension in the diplomatic process. Overall, the American diplomat’s remarks demonstrate a pragmatic approach to the situation on the front and in diplomacy — according to him, war cannot be resolved quickly, and a prolonged conflict is unlikely to lead to peace. The U.S. is willing to continue supporting diplomacy, but only if there is progress; otherwise, the humanitarian crisis will deepen and human losses will increase.
